A-GPS: Assisted GPS, GNSS, and SBAS Reviews

A-GPS: Assisted GPS, GNSS, and SBAS

Assisted GPS (A-GPS) has been developed to provide greatly improved capabilities, helping GPS work better and faster in almost any location. Offering a detailed look at all the technical aspects and underpinnings of A-GPS, this unique book places emphasis on practical implementation. The book reviews standard GPS design, helping you understand why GPS requires assistance in the first place. You discover how A-GPS enables the computing of a position from navigation satellites in the absence of precise time a topic not covered in any other book.

Moreover, you learn how to design and analyze a high sensitivity GPS receiver and determine the achievable sensitivity. The book provides detailed worksheets that show how to compute, analyze, and improve the processing gain from the input signal at the antenna to the signal after the correlators. These worksheets are used in the book to generate families of curves that completely characterize receiver sensitivity, parameterized in terms of front end noise figure, coherent and noncoherent integration times. From this work a law of achievable sensitivity is derived and explained in the book.

This cutting-edge volume discusses special forms of assistance data, industry standards for A-GPS, and government mandates for location of mobile phones. You also find coverage of future global navigation satellite systems and how they can be designed specifically for instant-fixes and high sensitivity. The book features numerous tables, worksheets, and graphs that illustrate key topics and provide the equivalent of a technical handbook for engineers who design or use A-GPS.

Paul Krugman or Niall Ferguson? On GPS with Fareed Zakaria.?
May 2, 2011 at 6:46 PM

Question by John S: Paul Krugman or Niall Ferguson? On GPS with Fareed Zakaria.?
I have to say I found Niall’s argument more compelling. Krugman seems interested in only postponing the inevitable which is to begin paying down the debt and balancing the budget. But then I read Ryan O’Neil’s budget that Ferguson recommends and I found it utterly preposterous. It’s loaded with old ideas like flat taxes, cuts of corporate income tax (a tax that’s bloated with many loopholes), elimination of dividends and capital gains tax, privatization of social security. It’s obvious none of these men are politicians because none of this will fly with the American public! The only decent idea is a national VAT coupled with reduction of the private income tax. This will lower conspicuous consumption, encourage saving and help nab those getting paid under the table. Since the VAT could not be evaded. I think we are just going to have to move forward with austerity and make big and painful cuts to welfare and defense spending. But I see this even to difficult since Repbublicans insist defense spending is not “discretionary” in actuality it is and dems can’t make difficult cuts to social spending. Wat are your thoughts on today’s show? The dollar deflation and the state of the American budget?
@ K. I agree with you about the pork! But Krugman is a leftie but I think he speak with genuine conviction. After Ferguson made an appeal for O’Ryan’s budget, I think he actually looks more the hack. But politics aside, what else should the congress do?

Best answer:

Answer by K
We need to somehow, some way separate politicians from public pork and projects so they are not forced to spend 90% of their time campaigning for more money for their district in order to buy votes. This is especially true for House of Reps, whose terms are only 2 years.

No modern politician of either party will ever get elected by saying NO to money being spent on their constituents. This form of buying votes must stop.

By the way , Krugman has no credibility whatsoever. He is not an economist anymore, and hasn’t been for decades. He is a political hack. His “nobel prize” was awarded to him for work he did 30 years ago.

What handheld GPS should I buy? PLEASE help me decide A.S.A.P?
May 2, 2011 at 4:47 PM

Question by ballintastic: What handheld GPS should I buy? PLEASE help me decide A.S.A.P?
Alright I will give you some of the details:
I want a good Garmin Handheld GPS device for Geocaching. I will be buying the Handheld GPS new from Amazon because I can save some money.

The GPS device I want is either a GPSMAP 60CSx or a Colorado 300 (or maybe one of the other Colorado ones.) I will be mostly Geocaching in parks, urban areas, and wooded areas. I think I might buy some sort of mapping software to put on the GPS I buy (I don’t know which one, if you have some good advice on a great one that would be greatly appreciated.) Both the GPSMAP 60CSx and The Colorado 300 cost under $ 500 new on Amazon. I am wiling to spend $ 550 and maybe more if another GPS device as broought to my attention as being better in some way than the ones I just listed.

The reason I want one of these good GPS’s is if I purchase one and when I receive it it doesn’t do what I wanted to do, or it doesn’t do it well I will be angry.

Please help me decide on which handheld Garmin GPS I should purchase.

Best answer:

Answer by geog_nerd
The Colorado lets you geocache paperlessly, that is, it will let you download geocache descriptions and previous logs directly to the GPS receiver. The 60CSx doesn’t allow this exactly. You can create custom POIs with special symbols and you can have the description put into the POI, but there are a few extra steps.

The 60CSx is a proven, well-liked GPS receiver. The Colorado is still fairly new and getting bugs worked out. There are also some questions about how waterproof it really is, and how durable the thumbwheel will be.

The question is, do you want the convenience of paperless geocaching (and the new Wherigo game) on the Colorado, or do you want a more proven unit that has fewer capabilities? These are pretty much the two best units you can get for geocaching right now. Oh yeah, if you do go the Colorado route, you should know that the 300 does not have maps with it, but the 400t comes with topos. However, you cannot view those topos on the computer. You might want to get the 300 and buy the topo maps separately, assuming you want topo maps. Personally, I have no use for them.

When will samsung fix the GPS on the Vibrant Galaxy S?
May 2, 2011 at 3:03 PM

Question by thatgirl: When will samsung fix the GPS on the Vibrant Galaxy S?
I currently own a G1 and the GPS on it is pretty reliable and I use it frequently but I want the new Samsung Vibrant. I heard the GPS really sucks on it and I’d rather wait till they get it fixed.

Anyone know when that will be? Also, how does the upgrade work? Are they going to upgrade the phone itself or just the uh.. program or whatnot?

Best answer:

Answer by Superharas
If it’s a hardware problem, it won’t get fixed.
If it’s software, it’ll get fixed ‘soon’.

Q&A: iPhone 3G with "Assisted GPS?" What is it mean?
May 2, 2011 at 8:27 AM

Question by Apaucl: iPhone 3G with “Assisted GPS?” What is it mean?
my question is what is the difference between GPS and Assisted-GPS? for instance, can I just use Iphone 3G as just a GPS system? would it work without contract or services? like i would just turn it on and use it as my navigation system like Tomcat. I wanna hear answers from the experts. thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Andrew
a-gps triangulates your location off of cell towers.
gps uses satellite chips that send and receive status
if it has installed maps, then you can use it without a data service. apple has not mentioned whether it will have maps installed.
a-gps is less accurate then gps, but most phones have a-gps and gps. GPS requires extensive use of a battery, where as a-gps is more efficient.
they both have pluses and minuses
but no, you wont be able to use it like a normal gps system, because the majority of dedicated gps systems have voice guided directions, where as the iphone will not.

What do you think? Answer below!

The built-in database offers thousands of points of interest for you to use as destinations or reference points as you plan your trip. The ONE XL will also provide a selection of available routes, giving you the option of avoiding toll roads or choosing between the quickest or the most scenic routes. The database includes zip codes to simplify your route selection, and for extra convenience, the ONE XL lets you save the addresses of frequent destinations, making route planning easier and faster than ever. Other display features include a compass mode to assist you with directional orientation, and an anti-glare screen for optimal viewing even in direct sunlight.

For additional navigational features to assist with trip planning, the built-in Bluetooth connection provides access to TomTom PLUS subscription-based services, so that you can tune in to the latest traffic and weather conditions, as well as download additional city maps, voices, points of interest, and much more. The ONE XL adds to these capabilities with FM radio-based RDS-TMC traffic information as an available accessory (not included).

Weighing less than 10 ounces and measuring 3.4 x 4.7 x 1.2 inches, the TomTom ONE XL can be easily installed in any vehicle. An included windshield suction mount holds it in place. Plus, with an operating temperature range of an icy -10 degrees to a sweltering 55 degrees Celsius (14 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit), the navigator is durable enough for New England winters or Arizona summers. The TomTom ONE XL is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that can be charged from your vehicle’s cigarette lighter with the included 12-24V adapter.
