I really like the Garmin GPS systems, for the car or handheld. They seem to have an edge on the competition in precision and features. Fast map rendering and satellite link, I’ve used others that seem to take minutes to find the satellites and then your coordinates and you have to be moving. The handheld unit has a electronic compass, altimeter and has Geocaching features. Runs on AA batteries, I’d recommend the rechargable lithium which seem to last longer and can we swapped out easily. Check out the following link for one GPS review:

Question by Jacob: What is a good handheld GPS unit for Geocaching?
Doesn’t need to be anything fancy, just planning on using it for Geocaching. Looking for something *A little* nicer than my current GPS unit, a Garmin eTrex Venture, possibly a color screen.

The Garmin 60csx is a very good unit for geocaching. You can bet very detailed maps for it, it has good sensitivity and is accurate. It’s not a cheap one.

I have a few that I would recommend and they have great price tags:

Garmin nüvi 265W/265WT 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic
*Bright 4.3-inch diagonal color touchscreen; 480 x 272 pixels, WQVGA TFT display with white backlight
*Sleek, ultra-thin design fits easily in pocket
*Preloaded with City Navigator North America NT
*Supports Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free calling when paired with Bluetooth-enabled cell phones
*NOTE: Model number on the box is 265WT because the traffic receiver is included; however, the model number on the device itself is 265W as the “T” in 265WT refers to the additional component

Q&A: Handheld GPS – Garmin?

Question by Jonathan Mathew McClellan: Handheld GPS – Garmin?
I am looking to buy my dad a Garmin for Father’s Day next week. We do alot of boating on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky, which is full of coves and turns and twists which all look alike so a handheld device will be perfect. He mentioned wanting a handheld Garmin. Again, we will be using this on the boat mainly. Any recommendations are well appreciated. Thank you.

I use the Garmin Legend Cx. 2 AA batteries that seem to last forever, or you can power it on through the usb cable, and it’s water resistant. no touch screen but easy enough to use. There is a slightly better model called the HCx. Supposedly it has a better antenna design and the US street map included. Overall, I am satisfied with my model. It doesn’t speak, and it won’t find your olive gardens or mcdonalds for you, but the features are enough for my needs. It will also record your path travelled and you can reverse the course so you can travel back the way you came (hansel and grettle with the bread crumb trail). I paid $ 135 for it last year from Bass Pro Shop
